posted in: Textures | 1

That’s right, we’re working right now on a teaser for the film! We can’t tell you just yet when we expect to put it online, but here’s a little sneak peek to keep you waiting :

We reworked a lot of shots lately and came up with some pretty cool ambiences. We can’t wait to show you all of this! In the meantime, here’s a few textures that were done in the last week for a sequence that takes place in the forest :

That’s it for this week! Come back soon for more exciting news on Le Gouffre™!

Week 79 – Sky Matte Paintings

posted in: Textures | 5

One thing we wanted from the very beginning with this film was to be able to paint a new custom sky for every shot. Many ideas were cut because of time constraints, but we’re very happy that the skies aren’t one of them because it adds this nice aesthetic appeal as well as allow us to work out the clouds so that they compliment the compositions perfectly. So for this week’s post, here are a few of the matte paintings that were done in the last few days!

And as a little bonus, here’s a new composited shot featuring the mill and villagers in broad day light. Click to see in full size!

Well, that’s it for this time. We hope you’re enjoying your summer, and stay tuned for exciting news coming up on Le Gouffre this fall. Also, don’t forget to subscribe to our Facebook to always be up to date with the latest happenings!

Week 61 – Rain and Mist Effects

posted in: Compositing, Effets | 0

Hey everyone!

We’re back with a little tutorial, this time showing the technique we use to generate our rain and mist effects. We were asked if our effects were done in 2D or in 3D, well the answer is : a little bit of both! Even if the mist is rendered directly in our 3D scene, it’s actually being created along a grid without thickness, of which we render a foreground and a background version. It’s then in compositing that we premultiply it with our luminance depth pass to achieve the illusion of depth.

Yeah, we know, it’s probably a tad too technical for those of you who don’t do any 3D, but hey, we’ll make up for it another week!

By the way, all our effects are created using a plug-in for Softimage that’s called Exocortex Slipstream (http://exocortex.com/products/slipstream). The results are really nice and we always save a lot of time. If you haven’t already done so, go check out their demo, it’s worth it!

And now, here’s a video showing you all the steps of our technique :

So that’s it, we hope this was instructive. See you next time for more news about Le Gouffre!

Week 57 – New animated sequence

posted in: Animation, Compositing | 9

Hey everyone!

It’s been a while since we showed you any new shots so we decided to give you a little treat this week and present you a sequence of seven final shots with the little girl. It’s always a big dilemma to decide what we can afford to show you or not but since there aren’t too many spoilers this time, we figured you’d be glad to see more animated content.

So here it is: the longest sequence of continuous shots we’ve shown until now!

Well that’s it, we hope you liked it! Please let us know what you think, and see you all around at the next update!

Week 53 – The return of the Render Beast

posted in: Animation, Compositing | 5

Hey everyone!

First of all, some very good news for Le Gouffre™… we received yesterday by Fedex our computer that was broken! The motherboard had to be changed, but now the Render Beast is back in full force. This means we’ll soon be able to start rendering frames faster and even while we work!

We’re also very proud to show you the two latest shots composited by Thomas. We did a lot of development regarding the wet look of the ground. We hope you’ll like the result!

First, in video:

And, why not, a HD pic of each one so you can better appreciate the work that went into it.

That’s it! See you soon for the next updates on the film!
